Autumn might be my favourite time of year for a first date in Bradford. The parks turn gold, the air is crisp and the early evenings make everything feel a little cosier. It's not too hot and not too cold, and a walk followed by a hot drink does most of the work for you. Here are some ideas, whether you've only just joined Go Bradford Dating or you've been chatting with someone for a while.
Out among the leaves
Lister Park
The lake, the long paths and the trees changing colour make this one of the prettiest places in the city in October. It's easy to walk for twenty minutes or for two hours, depending on how the conversation is going. Cartwright Hall is right there if the weather turns, so check opening times if you'd like to pop in.
Roberts Park and Saltaire
A stroll beside the River Aire, then into Saltaire village for a coffee. There are plenty of benches, plenty to look at and plenty of places to warm up afterwards.
Shipley Glen and Baildon Moor
Woodland paths above Saltaire look wonderful in autumn, and Baildon Moor gives you big views over the valley. The moor can be exposed and the ground can be muddy, so wear proper shoes, check the forecast and stick to the paths.
The canal towpath
The Leeds and Liverpool Canal is lovely when the leaves fall, and the Five Rise Locks at Bingley are worth seeing. Wet leaves can make towpaths slippery, so take your time and keep away from the water's edge.
Somewhere warm afterwards
Salts Mill is a good choice if the sky darkens, with galleries and cafés under one roof. Cliffe Castle in Keighley is a Victorian house with a park around it, and Haworth has tea rooms along its cobbled main street. A busy curry house on the way home is hard to beat on a cold evening too. Check opening times before you set off, as hours often change as the season turns.
Make the most of the light
The clocks go back at the end of October, and it gets dark quickly. A late morning or early afternoon date means you can enjoy the colours and still be home in daylight. It also keeps things relaxed: a walk, a hot drink and a natural moment to say goodbye or make plans for another time.
A few autumn tips
- Dress for the weather. A waterproof coat and sensible shoes beat looking smart and shivering.
- Have a plan B. Know where you'll shelter if it pours, such as a museum or a café.
- Keep it short. An hour or two is plenty for a first meeting. If it goes well, you'll have a reason to meet again.
- Stay safe. Meet somewhere public, make your own way there and tell a friend your plans. Our guide to dating safely has more.
